Public defence of a doctoral dissertation by Pawel Burdziakowski, MSc Eng

Public defence of doctoral dissertation by Paweł Burdziakowski, MSc Eng took place on 5th November 2014. His thesis in geodesy and cartography explored the topic of "Methods of using image data received from a single non-metric digital camera with the objective to define the trajectory of an autonomous flying platform".

Navigators in the Space Agency

The academics from the Navigation Faculty at the Maritime University of Szczecin succeeded in winning a European research and development competition commissioned by the European Space Agency. Their task now is to investigate and improve the applicability in maritime environment of the EGNOS navigation system which until now was mainly used in aviation.

Exploring Viking sea routes - a lesson in navigation at the National Museum of Szczecin. 

An exhibition "From a solar compass to the DECCA system - history of hyperbolic navigation" was launched on 4th October in the National Museum of Szczecin, located in a building in the nearest vicinity of the Maritime University of Szczecin. It is an interactive exhibition where every visitor - aged 5 to 105 - may try to navigate as a Viking from the 11th century.

The Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin sang 2nd place in Ireland with their eyes closed

The Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin directed by Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch began the academic year and the art season 2014/2015 with a success. Two days ago the ensemble returned from the International Choral Festival in Derry, Northern Ireland, where they managed to land 2nd place. This is yet another success of the Szczecin choir on the musical map of European art events.

HYPACK software training was held in the Institute of Geoinformatics between 13-15 October 2014. Its participants had an opportunity to attend a lecture on editing and modelling data received from single- and multi- beam sounders and side-sonar.

The first ESABALT(Enhanced Situational Awareness to Improve Maritime Safety in the Baltic) project meeting was held in FGI, Masala near Helsinki on September 26th. The project is performed by partners from Finland Sweden and Poland.

IMO's Sub-committee on Safety of Navigation, Communication, Search and Rescue held its first session in London between 30.06 - 4.07.2014. The new sub-committee is a merger of the NAV Sub-committee on Safety of Navigation and the COMSAR Sub-committee on Communication and Search and Rescue.

The Maritime University of Szczecin was awarded the title of Business & Science Cooperation Leader. The award was granted by the Marshall of the West Pomeranian region during the 10th Forum of Self-governments as a token of recognition of effective and business-oriented investment and research undertaken by the University.

Green Cities 2014 – an unprecedented conference in Poland

Between 19th – 20th May 2014 a scientific international conference Green Cities 2014- Green Logistics for Greener Cities was held in Szczecin. It was devoted to urban logistics with particular emphasis on issues connected with environmental protection and reducing negative effects of urban transport of goods on the environment.

Lecture delivered by Prof. Russel G. Thompson from the University of Melbourne
Sustainable Transport Development Day was held at the Faculty of Engineering and Economics of Transport on 22nd May. Its purpose was to familiarize students with basic issues concerning the idea of sustainable transport and demonstrate the necessity of appropriate measures in that scope.

University Celebrations and Reunion of the year 1974 graduates of the Maritime University of Szczecin

This year’s program of University Celebrations was accompanied by the 40th anniversary of graduation of the first Alumni of the Maritime University from 1974. About 30 graduates, both from Poland and abroad, arrived to their Alma Mater. Vice-Minister of Infrastructure and Development, Mrs Dorota Pyć, attended the ceremony.
