Between 23rd - 27th April 2014 in Rogów, Forestry Experimental Research Unit of Warsaw University of Life organized an international conference for students, the main theme of which was “Green Economy and Greening University. Students in Action”.

The conference was organized within The Baltic University Programme (www.balticuniv.uu.se), in cooperation with the secretariat in Upsalla, Sweden and Polish BUP Centre in Lodz (Technical University of Lodz). The conference was attended by 67 students from 36 higher education institutions from 30 cities and 12 countries: Belarussia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Ukraine. MUS was represented by Ms Elwira Kolakowska, a 1st year student of the Master studies in the field of Transport (the Faculty of Engineering and Economics of Transport), a member of METACENT – student science club at the Navigation Faculty.

The conference allowed a review of current situation in the context of most significant challenges of the economy and sustainable development in the region of the Baltic Sea. The participants were given an opportunity of gaining a deeper insight into a selection of issues related to creating a sustainable future. They could also engage in projects on making their universities more ecological. Furthermore, the students participated in a controversial, Oxford-type debate on “Economic development – for or against?”.

The conference allowed all students to assess their individual contribution and influence on contemporary society and gave them premises for taking wise and aware decisions in the future in terms of sustainable development.
