On 18.9.2011 nine students of the Maritime University Szczecin of participated in the Workshop at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London.

The workshop was organized within the activities of student research by Zbigniew Szozda, PhD, the tutor of METACENT scientific circles. In the workshops the 3rd year students of the following specializations TM, PHION, MSI and ESO had a chance to see the activities of the IMO, its structure, budget, procedures, the most important current tasks, and other interesting topics presented by the staff of the IMO.

The students visited the Knowledge Centre, where they were encouraged by the IMO staff to collect the data and materials for their BSc and Master’s theses, such data including also doctoral dissertations are available for free. Moreover, they met with three Poles working in the IMO: Mr. Andrzej Kosowski - Polish Permanent Representative to IMO, Mr. Tadeusz Wojtasik - Chairman of the Polish delegation at the sixteenth meeting of the Subcommittee DSC, Ms. Dorota Lost Siemińska - an employee of the legal department. Apart from that they participated as observers in the same 16th session of the Subcommittee deliberations DSC, on the carriage of dangerous goods, solid cargoes and containers. Through workshops, students have had the opportunity to broaden their knowledge on the occurrence of safety rules and learn some more about behind the scenes work of the IMO. The students will share their impressions on the IMO Workshop in the next issue of Academic Marine News.
