The concert tour in Canada and participation in the International Choral Kathaumixw festival in Powell River in Canada confirmed the high level of the Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin.

The ensemble conducted by Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch, DSc. won the first place in the category of mixed choirs.

The festival, with its almost 35 years of tradition, is one of the most well-known choral competitions in the world and Powell River became the world capital of choral music between 3rd and 7th July.

25 choirs from all over the world, e.g. from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, USA, Uganda, Cuba or Canada, qualified for this year’s edition. Europe was represented only by two ensembles - the Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin and the “Ad Una Corda” choir from Slovakia.

The Kathaumixw festival enjoys huge popularity, gathering the audience of several thousands in almost all concerts. The Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin was also distinguished with an invitation to participate in the galas opening and closing the ceremony, which were really spectacular.

The extremely intense tournée of the choir around the Canadian British Columbia involved 12 performances, during which the audience reacted very vividly and appreciated the artists with a standing ovation. Also, the fact of the choir members being recognised in the streets of the town was surprising. This was the greatest confirmation of the appreciation for the skills of the ensemble from Szczecin.

- I’m not able to count all the nice words we heard while staying in Canada. The best proof is the fact that all our concerts had been sold out long before - said a member of the choir, Kamil. The choristers were also moved while meeting the Poles who settled in Canada many years ago and also enjoyed the sound of Polish songs.

- I am moved with the success and proud of my ensemble, which has proven again that hard work brings outstanding results. It was an honour to me to receive so many congratulations from the members of the jury, the conductors of other ensembles and the fantastic audience - Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch, the conductor, summed up the trip.

We would like to remind everyone that it is another international success of the choir following the victory in May during the competition in Holland, where the ensemble took the first place.

The Canadian tournée is the culmination of the rich artistic season of the Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin.
