The ESABALT project implemented by the Faculty of Navigation (under Prof. Zbigniew Pietrzykowski) has been granted the flagship project of the EUSBSR - European Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and was added to the strategy's Action Plan announced in June.
The project consortium comprises only four partners.
The project entitled “ESABALT - Enhanced Situational Awareness to Improve Maritime Safety in the Baltic” aims at creating an integrated marine safety-improving system which would encompass state-of-the-art solutions in positioning, e-navigation, Earth observation and multi-channel marine cooperative communications.
Its main aim is to develop a technological solution to provide an enhanced situational awareness for all ships operating in the Baltic, including real-time maritime traffic monitoring and a marine environment observation system relevant for maritime transportation and accident prevention.
The solution is designed to contain information necessary to estimate the ice layer at sea, chemical spill size, wave height, currents, as well as speed and direction of the wind. Additionally, the system will include three specialised services: intelligent marine navigation and routing information, efficient emergency response, and environmental monitoring and reporting with emphasis on cross-border cross-sector functionality.
