In this year's 47th edition of the Legnica Cantat contest, which took place last weekend, the five-person Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin conducted by Sylwia Fabiańczyk-Makuch won the Golden Diploma, the second place in the general classification and the Prize of the City Mayor of Legnica.
The ensemble was also the only one to receive a special distinction: The Prize of the Polish Choir and Orchestra Association Management Board in Warsaw for the best performance of a piece by a Polish composer. The work awarded with the prize was Ave Maris Stella by Piotr Jańczak.
The National Choir Contest in Legnica is the oldest and most prestigious choral festival in Poland. The most precious trophy, i.e. the Ruby Lute of Jerzy Liban from Legnica, by decision of the jury headed by Professor Stanisław Krawczyński, was given, this year, to the Academic Choir of the Warsaw University of Technology.
Participation in the Legnica Cantat contest is not a coincidence - the choral ensembles are selected based on previous eliminations and careful selection. The very fact of taking part in the contest is already a distinction, whereas taking a top position, which is the proof of a very high level and excellent preparation of the choir, is a dream of each conductor and chorister. This year’s edition was special because, after a 23-year break, the concerts were held again in the Royal Hall of the Legnica Knights’ Academy
