The Academic Szczecin Championship Regatta were held on the Odra River last Saturday (16th June). This was the first sports competition of this type in the history of the region initiated by students of the Maritime University of Szczecin from the sailing section of the Academic Sports Association. It was held in the North East Marina on Grodzka Island on the Odra River.

The fleet consisted of six identical TOM 28 ballast yachts supplied by MT Partners. These are world class yachts, which have already been tested during many regattas in Szczecin and the region.

The participants of the regatta included students of Szczecin universities:

  • the Maritime University of Szczecin
  • the West Pomeranian University of Technology
  • the Pomeranian Medical University

Races were organised in standard and sport categories. The standard category has limitations in using of a spinnaker and spinnaker boom resulting from security reasons. Crews in the sport category may use all sails available on the yacht and the auxiliary equipment.

The participants included six crews in the standard category and four crews in the sport category. The best crew in the standard category was the PMU team with their helmsman Dawid Grabiński, whereas the winner of the sport category was the MUS team led by Patryk Urba.

The competitors received support from the university authorities - the Rector of the West Pomeranian University of Technology, Jacek Wróbel, DSc. Eng., Professor of WPUT as well as Vice Rectors of MUS: Agnieszka Deja, PhD. Eng., the Vice Rector for Teaching, Andrzej Bąk, PhD. Eng., Professor of MUS, the Vice Rector for Maritime Affairs and Artur Bejger, DSc. Eng., Professor of MUS, the Vice Rector for Science. The competition was accompanied by a sailing picnic. During the picnic, students had an opportunity e.g. to meet the legendary sailor - Henryk Widera, who told them about his lonely voyages and plans for the nearest future.

The organiser of the event was Żegluga Szczecińska and the partners were the City of Szczecin, MT Partners, North East Marina and the Maritime University of Szczecin. The patronage over the regatta was taken by the Szczecin City Mayor.
