Traditionally, each academic year at the end of the summer semester Maritime University organizes a sporting event named "Szalupiada" with ‘DZ’ type boat races on the Oder River. This year the event took place on 2 June, at the Maritime Rescue Training Centre at ul.Ludowa.

The weather was not very pleasant, rain alternated with sunshine and cloudy sky, but this did not prevent sportsmanship and great fun. In the contest between competing launches faced 16 teams (the largest in the history of the organization of the regatta) that represent faculties and specialties of the Maritime University, Szczecin universities, workplaces, and the Szczecin athletes. After the opening event by the vice-rector for teaching Przemyslaw Rajewsk, PhD and SWFiS director, Arthur M. Lipecki, hoisting the MUS flag and striking bell (bell ringing) took place followed by the first races of students representing the MUS faculties fighting for the Cup of Rector.

The biggest supporters in this case were the deans:Prof. Zofia Jozwiak (WIET), Jacek Frydecki, Master Mariner (WN) and Piotr Treichel, PhD (WM)who cheered their students. The distance to cover was about 300 meters, of which sail “at full speed,” took an average of 2min 30sec. After three races all became clear and the cup went to the Faculty of Marine Engineering, the next was the Faculty of WIET, and the third were navigators. The rest of the Szalupiada competition was held according to the cup system (losers eliminated from further competition) with the four best teams from the previous event. The Oder races were held, and on the bank of the river during the breaks between the races the Physical Education staff ensured that guests and participants were treated with food and drinks, and could participate in various recreational and sports competitions.

By the way, the contest of pulling the line resulted in no less commitment than the launch races. This year, the rivalry of the female teams among which noteworthy MUS workers (shrews- Piekielnice), created a wonderful atmosphere of fun and healthy competition. Rowing Launches Race between ‘Piekielnice’ and students of the Academy of Art contributed to a lot of excitement and was a hit that all spectators had been waiting for. Thus, playing sports and competing around 15.00 the competition for the third place between MUS engineers and the team of rowers was completed with the victory for the former, who improved their score from the previous year. In the finals, the teams met Regional Board (Regional Water Management), and quite unexpectedly taking off for the first time ‘Kings Paddle’, a team representing the WIET faculty of MUS.

After a close race, worthy ‘Szalupiada’ finales RZGW team won by less than a boat length improving their outcome of the previous years when they took the second place. Finally, the ceremony was held during which the trophy and awards were presented by the newly elected vice-rector for teaching, Piotr Treichel, PhD. Each participant of ‘Szalupiada’ received a commemorative oar, a reminder of the sports event of a maritime character held every year on the Oder River.
