The closing meeting of the project ESABALT (Enhanced Situational Awareness to Improve Maritime Safety in the Baltic) was held on 10 February 2016 in Helsinki, at the headquarters of the National Land Survey of Finland, organized by the Finish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI). The project has been carried out by partners from Finland, Sweden and Poland. The Maritime University of Szczecin is a project partner: a Navigation faculty team of scientists is headed by prof. Zbigniew Pietrzykowski.
In June 2015 ESABALT was granted a status of Flagship Project under the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and was incorporated into the Action Plan of this strategy.
Its main aim was to develop a feasibility study for providing an enhanced situational awareness solution for all ships operating in the Baltic, including real-time maritime traffic monitoring, a marine environment observation system relevant for maritime transportation and an accident prevention system.
On the next day, 11 February, the Solutions for Maritime Situational Awareness (SIMSA 2016) workshop was held. The core themes of the workshop were:
- Challenges for maritime situational awareness, especially in the context of the Baltic Sea,
- State-of-the-art solutions and technology gaps for improving maritime situational awareness,
- Industry, academia, and national authority perspectives.
During the event representatives of enterprises and institutions presented their concepts and solutions increasing situational awareness. ESABALT consortium representatives submitted the achieved results.
