On 14th February 2018, the Maritime University of Szczecin completed negotiations with the National Centre for Research and Development concerning the activity scope of the project NEW HORIZONS.
The negotiations finished with success, which means that, soon, the University will be able to sign a co-financing agreement. This is to be the largest project ever carried out by the University within the area of teaching.
The project was prepared in the summer last year by a team of 10 people – employees of the University and, then, submitted to the call within the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development (POWER) as a part of action 3.5 called: Complex programmes of higher education institutions. The project budget is 7.2 million zlotys and includes 100 items. The project will be carried out in the period from 01.09.2018 to 31.07.2022. The scope of the project includes 8 complex tasks, each of which could constitute a separate project. The description of each task is presented below:
TASK 1 – Launching a new field of study NAVAL ARCHITECTURE (666 thousand zlotys) https://rekrutacja.pm.szczecin.pl/kierunki/oceanotechnika/
This is a full-time undergraduate programme conducted in the Polish language. There will be 48 places available, 16 of which will be reserved for female applicants. The programme consists of 7 terms - that is 5070 hours of classes to be taught, which will be fully financed with the project funds. Only the programme starting in October 2018 will be covered by the project.
The field of study will be offered by the Faculty of Navigation for the following specialisations:
- design and construction of vessels
- design and construction of yachts
Except for financing of the costs of teaching, the project will involve purchasing of the latest software necessary for conducting the classes, a laboratory for designing vessels and yacht as well as the necessary literature.
TASK 2 – Launching a new field of study GEOINFORMATICS (815 thousand zlotys) https://rekrutacja.pm.szczecin.pl/kierunki/geoinformatyka/
Currently, the Maritime University offers the following first-cycle fields of study: Geodesy and Cartography (GIK) as well as Computer Science (INF), based on which, in October 2018, the new field of study - Geoinformatics is to be established. This is a full-time graduate (Master degree) programme conducted in the Polish language. There will be 32 places available, 20 of which will be reserved for female applicants. The programme consists of 3 terms - that is 1560 hours of classes to be taught, which will be fully financed with the project funds. Only the programme starting in October 2018 will be covered by the project.
Except for financing of the teaching costs, the project will involve purchasing the latest software necessary for conducting the classes (including e.g. software for integration of geodetic and multi-sensor data), a set of 17 graphic stations for data processing, a graphic and photogrammetric station, a system necessary for programming 3D data in the environment of virtual and augmented reality (including the most advanced goggles for moving in virtual reality together with high-power work stations).
TASK 3 – Conducting classes by INTERNATIONAL LECTURERS (421 thousand zlotys)
As a part of the project, the University is to invite the total of 20 internationally recognised authorities from EU and EEA countries (holding at least a PhD. and meeting the additional requirements included in the application), who will conduct the total of 1290 hours of classes in English in 20 subjects in 6 fields of study.
TASK 4 – Increasing STUDENTS’ COMPETENCES (716 thousand zlotys)
The task involves certified trainings recognised in the business, workshops developing competences, additional practical tasks in the form of projects and study visits. The classes will increase students’ professional, communication, language, computer and analytic skills. The planned activities comprise:
A) MARLINS specialist certified language courses for students of maritime fields of study
B) Workshops increasing computer and professional skills
- ISO 28000 auditor
- Excel in logistics
- Computer graphics
- The art of selling and negotiations
- Hydrographic software
- Hypack
- A carrier in road transport of passengers and objects
C) Workshops increasing communication skills in English: medical, technical, business-related.
D) Workshops increasing communication skills for the hearing impaired
E) Other competence workshops:
- The Warehouse logistics game
- The Supply Chain logistics game
- Self-presentation
- Dealing with stress and solving conflicts
F) Study visits (the total of 129 people x 6h in Poland + the total of 40 people abroad; altogether: 148h visits in 18 groups)
G) Practical tasks in the form of project for students of GIK and INF;
TASK 5 – WORK PLACEMENTS (868 thousand zlotys)
The work placements will be available in 4 editions for the total of 85 people from the following fields of study:
- Computer Science
- Geodesy and Cartography
- Geoinformatics
- Ocean Technology
- Transport
The length of each work placement will be 360 hours in the period of 3 months with minimum 20 hours of tasks within a week.
TASK 6 – Increasing THE COMPETENCES OF THE TEACHING STAFF (360 thousand zlotys)
Within the task, support has been planned for 60 people in the following forms:
1. Workshops increasing teaching competences and presentation skills:
- Methods of conducting group classes
- Advanced teaching skills
- The art of presentation and public speaking
- Using an interactive whiteboard
- Creating on-line courses
In addition, 16 people will take part in an on-line course (including e.g. 60 h of work per person) within the scope of using Geogebra software supporting the process of teaching mathematics and other sciences.
2. Courses within the scope of teaching in English (40 people covered with support).
3. Teaching practice; 30 people covered with support.
The practice will be provided at foreign universities in the form of so called „job shadowing”.
TASK 7 – Increasing of the quality of IT tools used for UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT (2.3 million zlotys)
- Implementation of the virtual MUS system
- Modernisation of the current system of managing the teaching process
- Implementation of a new recruitment system
- Purchase of a new library system
- Implementation of a virtual laboratory technology
- Purchase of the operational system server software and software for virtualisation of the implemented environment
TASK 8 – Increasing THE COMPETENCES OF THE MANAGEMENT (368 thousand zlotys)
Within the task, support has been planned for 55 people in the following forms:
- Study visits for the management
- Trainings increasing the managerial skills of the management:
- Management styles and modern techniques of HR management
- Competence management
- Motivation and techniques of creative thinking
- Evaluation and coaching
- Time and change management
- Conflict and stress management
- Project management
- Management of public finances and financial discipline
- Management audit
- Risk management
3) Post-graduate and MBA studies for the management.
