Nawigator XXI is currently taking part in the MARELITT Baltic project on the Baltic Sea in another action which involves retrieving ghost nets.

During the first week of the action, a team of three professional divers caught the nets from the wreck of  MEMEL as well as verified the position of the wreck of Planeta.
In the second week, the weather made some of our plans impossible: a strong wind on the Baltic Sea effectively stopped us from sailing on Monday. However, on Tuesday, we were ready to take action near Kołobrzeg. In this stage of the project, the following wrecks were also cleaned from the nets: Siarkowiec, Kanonierka and Sycylia. So far, we have managed to pull out more than half a tonne of nets onto the board of Nawigator XXI.

The participants of the action include WWF Polska, MUS and the crew of Nawigator XXI.
The significant fact is that also students from the Maritime University of Szczecin took part in the activities on the ship while doing their on-board practical training.

The MARELITT project is an international initiative of searching for and retrieving lost fishing gear on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The lost nets are still catching fish, birds and sea mammals. They may be a source of plastic microparticles, thus having a negative influence on the condition of the maritime ecosystem.

The aim of the MARELITT project is development of simple, effective and environmentally safe methods for retrieving lost nets from the bottom of the Baltic Sea that would be adjusted to various geographical conditions as well as finding a systemic solution to the environmental problem related to lost fishing gear.
