With its traditional opening ceremony, the Maritime University of Szczecin welcomed nearly a thousand new students, including a record number of international students ever.

The ceremony was attended by the University's authorities, headed by the Rector, Wojciech Ślączka, PhD Eng., Master Mariner, MUS Professor, Marek Gróbarczyk, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Governor of  West Pomerania Province, representatives of the provincial and municipal authorities, MUS partner universities and other distinguished guests.

"This year's opening ceremony is taking place, for the second time, in the shadow of restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, although not as restrictive as it was a year ago – said MUS Rector. This allows us to look with confidence into the future, and I am very happy that we can meet today in a much larger group," he added.

Oaths, awards and distinctions

During the ceremony, apart from the oath of first-year students, awards, including the annual Sea Wolf award and distinctions from the university and the state were presented to the most active members of our community.

The end of the official ceremony was marked by the students’ parade which marched down the Wały Chrobrego (Chrobry Embankment)  accompanied by an orchestra, guard of honour and MUS choir.

"Those who did not return from the sea" tribute

The day before the new academic year opening ceremony, on Friday evening, another traditional ceremony took place at Szczecin Central Cemetery.
Tribute was paid to "Those who did not return from the sea" by MUS authorities,  MUS Guard of Honour, the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla Military Band, students and delegations from the region.

This commemoration is very important for us, as it refers to the maritime traditions of our university. The memory of our predecessors and the people who made up our community is extremely valuable to the present staff and students of the Maritime University of Szczecin.
