A meeting of ASEAN-EU for enhancing cooperation in the scope of marine safety.
Between 4-6th May 2015 in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) talks were held between countries of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the countries of the European Union. The meeting of ASEAN-EU High Level Dialogue on Maritime Security Cooperation was focused on “Enhancing cooperation between agencies and regions with the aim of improving marine safety”.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the following parties:
- ASEAN represented by: Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, Brunei, Vietnam
- The European Union represented by: EU ambassador in Malaysia, representatives of the European Commission (DG MOVE), representatives of EEAS (European External Action Service), representatives of EUISS (European Union Institute for Security Studies), as well as by experts in particular areas.
The Director of the Institute of Marine Technologies, Janusz Uriasz, PhD hablil. Eng, MUS Associate Professor attended the event as the expert on marine navigation information technologies.
The Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is composed of the following countries: Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Mjanma, Cambodia. One of the most significant sea routes in the world - the Strait of Malakka - is located in the region. The Strait is at the same time one of the most dangerous navigation areas in the world.
Technologies developed by the Maritime University along with findings of current research will be employed in the future to increase navigation safety not only in the Baltic Sea but also in such remote areas as the Strait of Malakka.
