"The Development Programme of the Odra River Waterway. New opportunities and challenges for local governments" - conference of local governments on the Odra River.

A meeting of the representatives from the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation was held on 5th April 2018 at the Maritime University of Szczecin.
The Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation invited representatives of communes, district and provinces located on the Odra River to take part in the event. During the meeting, there were presentations of e.g. the initial variants of the Odra modernisation on its border section.

- Today’s conference explicitly suggests that it is possible to make the Odra River navigable and this should be carried out - said Minister Marek Gróbarczyk. The conference is connected with the works on The Development Programme of the Odra River Waterway. The first meeting was held in autumn last year in Wrocław. Consultations with representatives of the areas where interest in development of inland transport is of key importance for development of the regions in general is valuable as it enables diagnosis of the actual needs. The Maritime University of Szczecin is already conducting research concerning inland transport as well as construction of inland waterways - emphasised Rector Wojciech Ślączka. Based on the conclusions from the conference and exchange of experience, it is possible to plan and carry out subsequent activities.

The Szczecin conference was divided in two panels: the plenary and the working sessions. During the plenary session, Monika Niemiec-Burtyn, the Director of the Department of Inland Navigation of the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation, made an introduction and presentation of the schedule of works on inland waterways of particular transport importance. Moreover, there was a presentation of the previous arrangements made based on the work of our scientists concerning e.g. the possibilities of transport, construction of vessels and environmental protection.

Development of the Programme is the first stage of implementing the objectives determined in the Assumptions to the plans for modernisation of the inland waterways in Poland for the years 2016-2020 with perspective until 2030.

The partners of the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation in organisation of the conference are the Maritime University of Szczecin and Zarząd Morskich Portów Szczecin-Śinoujście SA.
