Over 50 people participated in the inauguration of the "Academic Leeches" event initiated by students of the Maritime University of Szczecin. On the first day of the action, 13th March, out of 150 people donating blood in the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Szczecin, one third were the participants of "The Leeches".

- I donate blood because it costs nothings and I can really help someone - explained Majka Orzechowska, a student who has donated her blood for almost four years. - I’ve got a rare blood group, which additionally motivates me to share it - she added.

Among the students, there were also those who decided to donate their blood for the first time. Dmytro Zaychuk from “The Butterfly Effect” Marketing and PR Students’ Scientific Association admitted that it was the organisation of “The Leeches” that convinced him to try. - It’s a small thing and I feel as if I’ve done something grand - he couldn’t hide his joy. Having donated 450 ml of blood, instead of feeling worse, he had a burst of energy.

The event was also supported by MUS authorities: Rector Wojciech Ślączka and Vice Rector for Teaching, Agnieszka Deja, who appeared in the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre on Monday to donate their blood together with the students. - People working in the Centre create a very positive atmosphere and, thanks to them, the whole procedure is pure pleasure - said the Rector.

The action has only begun, but, as its originators - the students from “The Butterfly Effect” Marketing and PR Students’ Scientific Association, point out - the final date has not been determined. The amount of blood donated by MUS students, employees, graduates and friends - all who register with the “Academic Leeches - Maritime University of Szczecin” password will be entered into a separate register opened in the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre.

This is real support. - Blood is needed constantly and such events are a huge backup - says Anita Agapow, MD working at the Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centre in Szczecin.

This is why students have undertaken to react to the needs of the Centre and, if it is only necessary to donate blood in a greater amount or look for a specific group - they will pull together to help.

The supervisor of the TBE Scientific Association appreciates this attitude. - I’d like to express my thanks to all the students for their involvement and active participation in the event. They’ve proven again that the Maritime University of Szczecin has fantastic students. Well done - thanked Marta Barańska.
