Zbigniew Szozda, PhD, from the Maritime University of Szczecin has been elected for the second time the chairman of the Subcommittee for Stability and Load Lines and Fishing Vessels Safety – (SLF). On 10-14.01.2011 at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization in London, the 53rd Session of the Subcommittee for Stability and Load Lines and Fishing Vessels Safety – (SLF) was held. Zbigniew Szozda, PhD, a scientific – research worker of the Maritime University of Szczecin, led the seminar, during which he was elected a SLF Chairman for 2011/2012.
IMO is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. Entrusting Zbigniew Szozda, PhD with such an honorable but difficult and responsible position of the chairman of one of the IMO specialized subcommittees is considered a real distinction for Poland, Szczecin as well as the Maritime University of Szczecin, his workplace. Great Britain’s proposal of Mr. Szozda as a candidate for the SLF Subcommittee Chairman for 2011/2012 was unanimously approved by other countries like South Korea, South Africa, China, Greece, Mexico, Philippines, Denmark, Australia, Cyprus, Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan, Liberia, Malaysia, India and Indonesia
SLF Subcommittee deals with navigational safety in reference to ensuring vessels the survivability in bad meteorological conditions (tides and strong winds) or possible hull damages. Another concern of the Subcommittee is load limits ensuring the vessels’ sea-keeping. But the Subcommittee’s basic activity results in creating international regulations, based on worldwide research outcome and vessels operational experience presented at the meetings and developed in the form of conventions, codes, resolutions, directives etc. This year main issues will be fishing vessels safety concerning their design, equipment, stability, fire fighting protection, rescue means, crew training and others. The Subcommittee meetings are attended by delegations representing member as well as associated states, UN agencies, international government organizations (e.g. European Union), extra-parliamentary consulting organizations, mostly consisting of marine industry representatives. This year meeting was attended by 63 member states, two associated countries (China and Hong Kong), two other UN agencies (ILO and FAO), European Commission and 19 extra-parliamentary organizations. Polish delegation consisted of 6 people.
