Day 2 — Goal 4: Quality Education

October 21 (Tuesday)
We invite you to the event Open Access Week — Who Owns Our Knowledge? This year's Open Access Week takes place from October 20-26. The theme raises questions about the present and how, in times of transition, communities can regain control over the knowledge they produce. It also encourages reflection not only on who has access to education and research, but also on how knowledge is created and shared, where it comes from, and whose voices are recognised and valued.
The event is co-organised by the largest Szczecin universities - University of Szczecin, West Pomeranian University of Technology, PUM, and MUS.
Discover how open access supports science and collaboration!
We especially invite you to the open lecture and workshop in the Main Building of the Maritime University of Szczecin (Senate Hall, 2nd floor):
10:00 Welcome to the participants
10:15 - 11:00 Open Lecture
Piotr Brożek, PhD, Eng.: Science for Everyone – On the Power of Open Access
The meeting will be dedicated to the topic of Open Access in scientific publications. The main assumptions, benefits, and challenges will be discussed, as well as various publication models (gold, green, and diamond) – along with financing mechanisms and principles for sharing content. During the lecture, the advantages of open access will be addressed, such as greater visibility of research and faster knowledge exchange, as well as its limitations, including publication costs or the risk of predatory publishers. The event will conclude with a discussion on the impact of open access on the quality and development of science.

11:00 - 12:00 Open Workshop for Authors (in English)
Eszter Lukács, MA, IEEE, Develop Your Research Portfolio: An IEEE Workshop
The workshop led by representative Eszter Lukács will introduce participants to the opportunities offered by publishing in open access within IEEE. Particular emphasis will be placed on ways to increase the visibility and impact of research results, as well as practical tips and best practices that help increase the chances of publication. During the meeting, strategies for using the IEEE Xplore Digital Library database and selecting the appropriate scientific journal will also be discussed. Participants will learn how to effectively build their own research portfolio and promote their work in the spirit of open science. The workshop will be conducted in English.
