The work of the Programme  is coordinated by Council BUP and BUP national centers, located in 12 countries. The program has been running for over 20 years. It focuses on issues of sustainable development, environmental protection and democracy in the Baltic Sea. Basic forms of BUP activity are: developing common curricula and teaching materials, conferences and training teachers, student conferences, creating a platform for joint research and projects.

Maritime University of Szczecin, within the BUP activities, organizes International Student Conference in collaboration with the University of Uppsala and the Technical University of Lodz. The leading theme of the Conference is security and sustainability in the Baltic Sea region, with particular emphasis on maritime transport and marine spatial planning. The conference is attended by 52 students from 11 countries: Belarus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine and a guest from Spain - a student from Barcelona, ​studying in Lithuania under the Erasmus program. Among scholars who announced their presence, at the same time preparing lectures and workshops for students, are: Paula Lindroos, PhD - Director of BUP, Prof. Lars Emmeline - UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainability Spatial Planning, Prof. Jacek Zaucha - Maritime Institute in Gdansk, Mr Michal Gronert - Det Norske Veritas, Poland, and Zbigniew Szozda, PhD, - Maritime University of Szczecin, Chairman of the Subcommittee on sustainability, load line and safety of fishing vessels, the International Maritime Organization in London, Tomasz Branka - UAM Poznan.

In addition to the Conference, there are provided workshops, lectures and student presentations, in which selected participants will present their scientific achievements of their research at home institutions. Student presentations are to be published in the form of student research paper.
