The official ceremony was held in front of the MUS main building entrance. The Polish sign Akademia Morska was changed to Politechnika Morska.

The large sign on the main building roof has been installed a few days ago. These changes are the outcome of the recent development of our University in terms of facilities, the competence of our staff and the increasing number of courses which made the Polish parliament upgrade the status of MUS in the Polish educational system.

The name change is another step in the university's development.

The word "politechnika" comes from ancient Greek - polýtechnos - and means proficient in many arts. In the Polish educational system, a higher education institution called "politechnika" corresponds to a university or institute of technology in the generally accepted educational terminology used in English-speaking countries. The new name underlines the University's strictly technical profile. Our name in English though, will not be changed and remains the Maritime University of Szczecin.

We have always wanted to reach for more, and at the same time do not forget our roots and keep up the tradition of West Pomerania maritime education which is now 75 years long. The new brand opens up new development opportunities, and this is what we are most interested in. We aim to attract future engineers and deck officers. We prepare our students to work both at sea and on land. The new name emphasizes this duality, the interdisciplinarity of education and research. We now stand on two stable, sure foundations - said Wojciech Ślączka, Rector of the Maritime University of Szczecin.

The "rebranding" ceremony was attended by prominent guests, including the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Marek Gróbarczyk, the Governor of the West Pomeranian region, Zbigniew Bogucki, and members of the national parliament, who were involved in the parliamentary process of upgrading the status of the university.

New laboratories opened

September 1st marked not only a name change but also the opening of new research and teaching facilities. The university has gained 5 new laboratories, including an interactive high voltage laboratory, an interactive navigation laboratory and a telecommunications and automation systems laboratory. Several more facilities are planned to be built and equipped, including those relating to offshore wind energy training.
