On 14th January 1993, Jan Heweliusz ferry sank in the Baltic Sea. 55 people died then, making it one of the greatest tragedies in the Baltic Sea.
On Friday, 11th January, the anniversary was commemorated in the Central Cemetery in Szczecin. Flowers were laid at the monument commemorating the disaster victims and a roll call with their names was read aloud. The celebration was accompanied by the guard of honour of the Maritime University of Szczecin. On behalf of the university, flowers were laid by the Rector, Wojciech Ślączka, DSc. Eng., Master Mariner, Professor of MUS and the Vice-Rector for Maritime Affairs, Arkadiusz Tomczak, DSc. Eng., Mater Mariner, Professor of MUS.
