|  The Official Opening Ceremony

The official opening ceremony took place on Saturday, 3 October, at Wały Chrobrego, in front of the National Museum building. Attendees included university authorities, staff, students, alumni and invited guests representing the academic community, the maritime industry and  politicians
The ceremony opened with a performance by the Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin. While waiting for the ceremony to begin, attendees could also watch videos showcasing the University’s activities and campus life on a large screen.
At 11:00 a.m., the commander of the student formations reported to the Rector of the Maritime University of Szczecin, Wojciech Ślączka, who reviewed the student formations.
The raising of the national flag was accompanied by the Polish national anthem, performed by the orchestra. This symbolic moment marked the beginning of the ceremony, which once again brought the University community together at one of Szczecin’s most iconic locations.
In his inaugural address, the Rector highlighted the significance of the new academic year and the responsibility borne by a university that educates future professionals for the maritime sector.

“At the Maritime University of Szczecin, you will gain not only knowledge and skills, but also experiences that will stay with you long after you graduate. I hope this will be a time you look back on fondly throughout your adult life. I also hope you will come to feel that choosing this university - and being here today as a result - was the right decision,” said the Rector.

|  New Students Take the Oath

One of the highlights of the opening ceremony was the oath-taking by students beginning their studies at the Maritime University of Szczecin.

“Welcome to our maritime family! I encourage you to get involved in university life, including activities beyond your studies. The University offers plenty of opportunities, and the skills you gain through these activities can often prove just as valuable in life as academic knowledge itself. Getting involved in the Student Self-Government will teach you how to organise and take initiative; student research clubs will help you develop your passions and interests; sports activities will awaken your spirit of healthy competition; and joining, for example, the Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin could become the adventure of a lifetime. Find something that’s right for you!” said the Rector.

For these new members of the academic community, taking the oath marks the beginning of an exciting journey. Over the coming years, they will deepen their knowledge, develop new skills and prepare for their future careers.
Shortly afterwards, the Rector officially opened the 2026/2027 academic year. The announcement was accompanied by a performance of the academic anthem Gaudeamus igitur by the Choir of the Maritime University of Szczecin, followed by the distinctive horn signal of the training ship Nawigator XXI.
The deans of their respective faculties then presented the students with congratulatory letters.

|  Awards and Distinctions

During the ceremony, university staff received state decorations in recognition of their service. This was followed by the presentation of awards from the Ministry of Infrastructure to members of staff and University alumni.
The ceremony also celebrated academic promotions to doctoral and postdoctoral degrees. Members of the academic community received the corresponding insignia and formal confirmation of their newly awarded degrees, joining the ranks of PhD holders and habilitated doctors associated with the Maritime University of Szczecin.

|  Parade Brings the Ceremony to a Close

Following the official proceedings, the student units assembled for a ceremonial parade. Meanwhile, the excellent Świnoujście Military Orchestra performed in front of the grandstand, providing a musical backdrop to the final part of the celebrations.
The parade marked the symbolic conclusion of the opening ceremony. After the Maritime University of Szczecin’s flag was escorted away, the official proceedings came to an end.
