On December 4-6, 2019, the Dean of the Faculty of Navigation, Paweł Zalewski, PhD, DSc., and Vice-Dean for Science, Jarosław Artyszuk, PhD, DSc. at the invitation of the association of 4 Norwegian universities:
University of South-Eastern Norway (USN, https://www.usn.no/english/)
Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL, https://www.hvl.no/en/)
Norwegian University of Science and Technology - branch in Alesund (NTNU, https://www.ntnu.edu/alesund)
The Arctic University of Norway (UiT, https://en.uit.no)
conducting joint doctoral studies in nautical science, participated in the Norwegian Maritime Days (NMD) 2019. It is an event whose goal is to open (on an international forum) the discussion of research projects and underlying doctorates. As well, the overarching idea behind this meeting is to establish international cooperation in the field of research, exchange of academic staff and education of young researchers, both to and from Norway, and research funding. About 40 participants took part in NMD, of which the most numerous were doctoral students and their promoters from the above universities.
The meeting took place on the cruise ship 'Color Fantasy' (https://www.colorline.com/kiel-oslo/facts-about-color-fantasy) sailing on the Oslo-Cologne route.
Among international partners, in addition to the representation of the Maritime University of Szczecin, there were also delegations from World Maritime University (Malmo, Sweden, Prof. Max Mejia), Liverpool John Moores University (Great Britain, Prof. Ian Jenkinson) and Delft University of Technology (Netherlands, Prof. Frederik Schulte).
The first day of intensive meetings between 1100-2000, practically without interruptions, on the way to Cologne, was devoted to the presentation of doctorates, together with discussion and cross-fire questions. They concerned the following projects:
"Data-driven decision support for maritime situation awareness",
"Reinforcement learning for reactive navigation",
"Advanced Data Analytics for Ship Performance Monitoring in Autonomous Maritime Operations",
"Safety Of Automated Navigation - SAUNA",
"Design for safety: developing user-centred interfaces for marine navigation systems",
"Seaport Development: Innovations in Multi-Organizational Operations",
"Impact of the Digitization and Digitalization on Ro-Ro Port Stays by means of Terminal Modelling and Discrete Event Simulation (DAMOS)",
"Blockchain Technology Applied to the Maritime Offshore Supply Chain and Logistics Operations - Norwegian Oil and Gas Digitalization",
"Future skills and psychological capital for personnel in the maritime industry",
"Connecting future competencies of seafarers and pedagogical approaches in Maritime Education and Training",
"Human-Autonomy Teaming (HAT) in Future Maritime Operations",
"Leading for safety: an exploration of leadership for safer ship operations",
"ARCEVAC - Analysis of evacuation of passenger ships in Arctic waters",
"Applications of Wearable Virtual Reality in Maritime Education And Training".
The second day (on the way back to Oslo) comprised prelections of invited international partners and a meeting summarizing the specific scope of cooperation and coordination of activities. Professor Paweł Zalewski presented a paper entitled "The Faculty of Navigation at the Maritime University of Szczecin: Expertise, Research & Education".
